THE INFLUENCE OF PREFIXATION ERRORS IN TEXTS ON SEMANTIC CHANGES

Abstract

The article analyses prefixation errors in Uzbek texts and the semantic changes they produce. Prefixation in Uzbek is confined to a small inventory of elements of Persian, Arabic and international origin, and the meaning of a prefixed word is normally compositional, which makes every deviation in the choice or the segmentation of a prefix a direct source of semantic distortion. Six types of error are distinguished: the choice of a wrong prefix from a synonymous set; pleonastic marking, in which a prefix and the suffix -siz express the same negation twice; the substitution of a prefixal formation for a suffixal one where the two are not interchangeable; false segmentation of stems that only appear to be prefixed; orthographic errors at the prefix boundary; and mechanical calquing of foreign prefixes in translation. The consequences are described at four levels: denotative, modal and evaluative, scopal, and terminological. Legal and official texts are examined as the register in which the terminological consequence is most costly, with the pair noqonuniy and g'ayriqonuniy as the central example. A separate section treats the effect of false segmentation on automatic morphological analysis, where stripping be- from bemor destroys the stem and every operation built on it. The article concludes with an editorial procedure for prevention.
