Abstract

This article examines the semantic foundations of punctuation in English dramatic works. Punctuation marks are not merely technical devices used for grammatical organization; they also function as significant semantic tools that convey meaning, emotions, pauses, emphasis, and communicative intentions. Drama, as a literary genre closely connected with spoken language, provides a rich field for investigating the semantic role of punctuation. Through the analysis of selected English dramatic texts, the study explores how punctuation contributes to characterization, emotional expression, discourse organization, and pragmatic interpretation. The findings demonstrate that punctuation serves as an essential element in constructing meaning and enhancing the communicative effectiveness of dramatic discourse.
